Sister Na’s Eyes Were Distorted by the Police

In the afternoon on January 19th, 2003, Zuoen Sun, the Associate Director of State Protection Team, Jidong County Public Security Department, Heilongjiang Province, led several police drive to the front of a house. After making the door opened with the excuse of “looking for a house”, the police dashed inside while two guarded the door. Officer Sun shouted at two women, “Stand on the bed. Do not move!” Then the police started to ransack the house. Within a short time, the house was turned upside down. Pointing at a Bible, a Jesus’ portrait, and four books, Officer Sun said, “Do you know why arrest you? Because you illegally believe in God! These are the evidence!” Then the police forcibly pushed them into the police car. Just several minutes ago, a woman was arrested by this group of police after she had walked out of the house for a short distance. She was already sent to the county public security department.

The arrested were Chunxiang Shi, a church leader from Jidong Town, Jidong County, Caiqin Na, from hengshan District, Jixi City, and Suying Wang, from Donghai Mine, Jixi City. They were arrested just after coming back to the rental house from preaching.

They were escorted to the State Protection Team Office, where they were body-searched and interrogated. Then they were sent to the county detention center. They were further interrogated and tortured at the detention center. Officer Sun led several police tried to force them tell where they got the spiritual materials, where they went to preach, and where they assembled. The police beat them up while questioning them. The three female Christians were slapped on the face, punched at the head and breast. A policeman used a plastic hose to strike Sister Na. Even her eyes were distorted after the beating. The police laughed at them, “Don’t you believe in Lord? How come your lord did not come to rescue you? Where is God!”

During their detention, the three families pleaded through connections. The police extorted 1000 RMB (~$125) from Shi family, 2000 RMB (~$250) from Na family and 3000 RMB (~$375) from Wang family, and forced them to make a written statement to promise that they would renounce their faith. Then on March 13th, the three were bailed out after being detained for 53 days.
