20000 RMB for Release

It has been reported that on May 8^th, 2003, there were four Christians arrested in Shengtang Town, Yingshang County, Anhui Province. Now, it is known that Zhaoying Zheng, Jiaxiu Lin and Yun Wei were detained as criminals for 41 and 43 days. To get them out, their families spent over 20000 RMB (~$2500).

On the same day when they were arrested, the police sent them to the county detention center under the charge of “disturbing social security”. 25 days later, they were transferred to the county custody center. During their detention, the County Public Security Department State Protection Team Lead Zhongcheng Yang and police from Yinghe Town and Shengtang Town interrogated and tortured them for about ten times. But none of them gave in.

The families of Zheng, Lin and Wei bribed the police in order to get them out. Zheng’s family spent 400 RMB to treat the police meals, and gave 2000 RMB to Zhongzheng Yang and paid 3000 RMB fine. On June 18^th, Zhaoying Zheng was released after 41 days of detention. Lin and Wei’s families spent 1400 RMB and 2500 RMB, respectively to bribe the police, and then paid 5000 RMB each. On June 20^th, Lin and Wei were released after 43 days of detention. According to the police, the fourth Christian Duoming Wu might be sentenced to labor camp for one to two years.
