The Police Extorted Toil Money from Miners
In June 2003, three miner Christians were arrested from Shitai Mine in Dujie District Huaibei City, Anhui Province. They were extorted 6000 RMB (~$750) toil money.
In the morning on June 3rd, Dujie District Police Branch Political Protection Team Leader Liang Yuan together with several local police arrested Yishu Wu from his working place at Shitai Mine. They took him to the district branch and then called his wife to the branch. Then the police tried to force them to tell the church leaders and meeting places by beating and intimidating. The interrogation lasted till 7:00 at night. The couple did not give in. Then the police extorted 3000 RMB as a fine with the charge of “joining cult organization”. After collecting the money, the police set them free.
In the morning on 9th, the same group of police arrested Christian Fanzhi Li from the same mine. After 28 hour custody at the mine police station, he was extorted for 3000 RMB under the same charge. Without any choice, Brother Li handed in the money he earned by toiling and risking life in the mine. He was released thereafter.
