About Yunkun Wang

Heping Street, Wulanhaote City, Inner Mongolia Province

On June 5th, 2001, Yunkun Wang and his wife, Junzi Sun were arrested because of their Christianity faith by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) of the city, and detained at Beitou Detention House for “criminal detention”.  Brother Wang was a lame with born leukemia, and his wife is handicapped with her right arm. Despite of these conditions, the police officers laughed wickedly, “Except the dead, we arrest whatever as long as alive’.

The wife was release on July 7th of the same year. But the husband was stilled in detention. Around 1:00 pm of July 13th, police officer Guangzhong Xin drove a jeep to Wang’s house and told his wife and the only daughter that Wang’s teeth started bleeding since morning and asked them to prepare money to send to the detention house for treatment. They tried their best to borrow money, but still not enough. Around 8:00 pm, Officer Xin went to their home again and took them to the detention house where they found Wang died already. The director of the PSB replied to the wife request for a postmortem, “That is fine. Then you have to pay the fees for postmortem and cremation.” Because they were extremely poor, they gave up the request without any choice. The next day, Wang was cremated and the PSB paid the fee of 1,200 Chinese dollars.

On August 5th, the wife and daughter saw the city TV station showing a video record in which Wang with his left arm wrapped with a piece of cloth, was surrounded by some people helping him. Not until this time that the wife and daughter knew that Wang’s symptom started earlier than the day they were noticed because the record was made on July 5th.

This was what happened: The other detainees cried to the PSB officer many times after they saw Wang’s nose and mouth bleeding. Then the officer reported to the PSB bureau chiefs several times through the phone. But nobody cared. Until the next shift officer came and saw the situation became very severe, then the officer ordered the other detainees to carry Wang to the clinical not far way from the detention house. However, it was already too late…

The helpless wife and daughter went to see the PSB chiefs many times in order to have an explanation on “Went in alive and came out dead”. But every time they were stopped by some fierce policemen at the front gate. Then they tried to get help from People’s Representative Conference, Policy Consult Conference, Department of Prosecution, Court, Legislative Department, and other administrative departments. But what everyone told them was just it would be dealt according to law but nothing could be done before a full investigation (which will never be done).
